How the score works
- For every instrument we take three price returns: the last 3 months, the last 6 months, and 12 months ago to 1 month ago (the “12-1” return).
- Each return is turned into a percentile among all instruments with a current close: 100 for the highest, 0 for the lowest.
- The available percentiles are averaged (at least two are needed) and the averages are ranked again, 0 to 100.
The score is relative: 80 means the price rose more than for about 80% of the other instruments over those windows, not that it rose 80%. In a falling market the top score can still belong to a falling price. Indices are ranked in the same set, so they show where the market itself sits.
The other columns
- 12-1M.
- Skips the latest month. Academic studies of momentum (Jegadeesh and Titman, 1993) do this because one-month moves tend to partly reverse.
- Vol-adj.
- The 12-1 return divided by the annualised volatility of daily returns: how much the price moved per unit of day-to-day swing.
- From high.
- How far the last close is below the highest close of the last 12 months; 0% means at the high.
- Trend.
- Whether the last close is above or below the simple average of the last 200 closes.
- EdgeScore.
- The financial-strength verdict from annual reports, for companies EdgeScore rates. It is independent of the price.
Limits
- Price returns, without dividends: a stock that paid a large dividend shows a lower return than its holders received. BET-TR includes reinvested dividends; BET does not.
- Thinly traded shares can show large moves on small volume; the table does not filter by liquidity.
- Instruments with under 12 months of history have no 12-1 return; with under 200 closes, no trend state. A close older than 10 days is marked stale and left out of the ranking.
- Past momentum has persisted on average in many markets over long periods, and has also reversed sharply (for example in 2009). Use it to describe, not to decide.
